It is located in the central part of the Right Bank Ukraine and borders seven other administrative oblasts of Ukraine. Along the southwest of the oblast the Dniester river passes. A 202 km (126 mi) long section of the state border with Moldova.

Vinnytsia is located about 260 km (160 mi) southwest of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, 429 km (267 mi) north-northwest of the Black Sea port city of Odessa, and 369 km (229 mi) east of Lviv.

A long lasting warm summer with a sufficient quantity of moisture and a comparatively short winter is characteristic of Vinnytsia. The average temperature in January is −5.8 °C (21.6 °F) and 18.3 °C (64.9 °F) in July. The average annual precipitation is 638 mm (25 in).

Vinnitsa's 2021 population is now estimated at 375,642. In 1950, the population of Vinnitsa was 79,555.

National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya was founded in 1921. In 1960 the educational institution was named after M.I.Pirogov, in 1984 he was awarded the Order of Honor. Since 1994, the Vinnytsia Medical Institute has been certified and accredited to the IV level of accreditation and has been granted the status of the University. The national status of the university was acquired in 2002, in the same year it was awarded the diplomas of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The Medical University has traditions in educational, research activity, an organization of the students’ leisure, relations with the graduates.

Material-technical basis: 3 educational buildings, modern equipment, research center and center of new information technologies, more than 780 modern computers, which are connected up to the Internet, a large library (500 thousand books), own printing house.

At the medical university 6250 students are trained, including 2080 foreigners. In total about 44000 doctors, among them 2100 specialists of the highest level, possessing the Candidate’s and Ph.D., M.D. degrees, including more than 7500 foreign citizens from 106 foreign countries of Europe, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Africa) have been trained. Annually the University chairs issue 10-12 text-books of methods and other educational-methodical materials for the foreign students.
